Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a big tray with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and lemon zest. Make a small dip in the center, then add the egg, butter, and milk. Use a fork to mix until it just holds together, then gently press it into a smooth dough on a flat surface.

Twist the dough into rings or knots about 5-6 inches long after rolling them into long ropes. Lay them out on the parchment paper.

Bake for 15-18 minutes until the edges are barely golden. Leave them to cool down completely before adding the glaze.

Sift your powdered sugar, then whisk it with milk and lemon juice until it’s the right consistency. Drizzle over the cooled cookies or add finishing sugar instead.
