Slice onions into 1/4-inch thick rounds and gently separate the layers into single rings.

Place onion rings in a single layer on the lined tray or basket. Fill the center of each ring with shredded cheese, ensuring cheese is contained within the ring.

Sprinkle garlic powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, and salt evenly over the rings. Optionally, scatter panko breadcrumbs, bacon bits, jalapeño slices, or a drizzle of hot sauce.

Bake in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or air fry for 8 to 10 minutes, until cheese is bubbling and edges are crisp. Begin checking at the minimum time to avoid burning.

Allow onion ring chips to rest for 2 to 3 minutes before carefully removing from the tray. Serve while hot with a preferred dipping sauce.
