Pour in the water. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender but not mushy and the sauce thickens.

If sauce thickens too quickly, add 1 tablespoon water. If sauce is too thin, simmer an additional minute. Serve warm as a side or topping.
